“We want an X-Files sequel, and we don’t want it good, we want it Friday!” someone at Fox must have said. Critically mauled on its cinema release, where I Want to Leave was a more apposite sobriquet, the return of Mulder and Scully is more effective on the small screen, where it feels like a feature-length reunion episode, a kind of 21st century Bionic Ever After. No Mulder/Sculler nuptials here, however: just a prescient paedophiliac priest (an impressive Billy Connolly), a missing FBI agent, and a mystifying absence of scale, even compared to some TV episodes. The biggest mystery? Why, after a six year wait – ten since the first movie – this is the best Chris Carter & Co could come up with.
