The Wild Bunch: The Original Director’s Cut Blu-ray Review

WildBunchSquareRestored in 1994 to its original Panavision splendour, Sam Peckinpah’s stylized, violent and powerful Western, widely regarded as a masterpiece of the genre, demands a supreme HD transfer, and doesn’t disappoint. William Holden leads a group of outlaws and desperados – including Ernest Borgnine, Ben Johnson and Warren Oates – mixed up with Mexican militia, following a botched bank raid which they hoped would be their last score.

EXTRAS: Commentaries by a bunch of Peckinpah biographers and documentarians is supplemented by 8 minutes of outtakes, five vintage Peckinpah trailers, and three documentaries: Sam Peckinpah’s West: Legacy of a Hollywood Renegade, a feature-length, star-studded study of the maverick director’s Western adventures; an excerpt from Nick Dedman’s film A Simple Adventure Story; and the original Oscar-nominated ‘making of’ (30 mins).
