What Maisie Knew (Empire On-Demand Review)

WhatMaisieKnewSquareWhat Maisie Knew (2013), VOD

This artful and inspired update of Henry James’ 19th century novel, from directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel (The Deep End), offers a worm’s eye view of a bitter custody battle between a mercurial rock star (Julianne Moore) and a self-centered art dealer (Steve Coogan), whose guileless daughter, Maisie (Onata Aprile), is caught in the crossfire. The entire cast, including Alexander Skarsgard and Joanna Vanderham, is note perfect, but 7-year-old Aprile is the standout – this year’s Quvenzhané Wallis – giving one of the most tender, unaffected and quietly astonishing performances of the year.
