Quentin Tarantino’s first Western (more accurately a ‘Southern’) borrows the name of Sergio Corbucci’s antihero, and the revisionist stylings of Sergio Leone, to tell the story of a bounty hunter (an Oscar winning turn from Christoph Waltz) who frees noble slave Django (Jamie Foxx), first to track down an outlaw gang, then to rescue Django’s wife (Kerry Washington) from an evil plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). Despite an overlong running time, and Foxx’s underwhelming performance (original choice Will Smith would have crushed it), this is vintage Tarantino.
