As I Lay Dying (2013), Netflix

All credit to director/co-writer/star James Franco for tackling an adaptation of William Faulkner’s 1930 novel, in which the Bundren family encounters the worst aspects of Mother Nature and human nature while attempting a grueling crossing of untamed rural Mississippi on a quest to bring their mother’s body to her hometown for burial. Franco’s grasp exceeds his reach, but this is a valiant effort worthy of the Bundrens themselves.

Empire rating: ★★★
