The Green Prince (★★★★ Empire Review)

GreenPrinceSquarePLOT In the aftermath of Israeli leader Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination, the son of a leader of Palestinian guerrilla organisation Hamas is arrested and coerced into becoming an informer for Israel. This documentary tells the story from both sides.

Someday the story of Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of a Hamas leader who became a double agent and informer for Israel, will make an intensely gripping thriller, somewhere between Homeland and A Prophet. In the meantime, there’s this documentary, which employs just two talking head interviews – Yousef himself, and Gonen Ben-Yitzhak, his interrogator-turned-handler at the Shin Bet (Israeli homeland security) – to good effect, tell the extraordinary story of a man who turned his back on his father, his country and his ideals, risking life and liberty to help Israel prevent terrorist attacks, thus saving lives.

VERDICT Prolific producer John Battsek (One Day in September, The Imposter, Searching for Sugar Man) scores another winner with this gripping documentary about a Hamas double agent, and the fallout from his daring betrayal. ★★★★
