Filmed opera is enjoying a resurgence, but it’s unlikely anything will top Powell and Pressburger’s immaculate staging of Offenbach’s opéra fantastique about the three loves of a poet: a devious courtesan, a dying soprano and an automaton (The Red Shoes’ Moira Shearer). This 4K restoration (supervised by Powell’s widow, Thelma Schoonmaker) somehow improves upon perfection. “The whole film dances” Martin Scorsese once said. Now it sparkles too.
